Refuge walk – By Mandy Young

Every year I sign up for a few charity events to participate in as a motivational tool to kickstart my exercise regime for the new year.  I chose the charities that support causes that are personal to me.  My first event of 2023 is a 56-mile walking challenge in February for Refuge, a charity that is close to my heart.

Refuge work tirelessly to highlight domestic abuse and help women and their children escape domestic abuse.  I have several friends who experienced domestic violence and controlling partners.  Their sunny personalities descended into anxiety and fear for themselves and their children, they lost confidence and some their careers and financial independence plunging them further into despair.   Luckily, I was able to help move and house 2 of them and their children until they could get back on their feet, but not everyone has friends and family who they can talk to or who can provide emergency accommodation and support.

We need charities like Refuge, more than ever, as the negative impact of Covid and the cost-of-living crisis has seen a huge increase in domestic violence.

Refuge run a Domestic Abuse Helpline and refuges with the essentials a woman needs for her first night.   The money from my fundraising will help support women and children survive domestic violence.

Donating to charity whether it’s by fundraising in an event like this or by donating through your employers Payroll Giving scheme is good for the charity and good for your mental health.  I will feel much better knowing that my small contribution could save someone, and hopefully I will be a slimmer and fitter version of myself by the end of February!
