Over the last year or two Shelter have been fighting to end DSS discrimination. What I mean by this is that a lot of people who receive benefits are not able to private rent, due to the majority of ads historically saying ‘no DSS’.
This becomes especially hard when you consider the fact that 1.15 million households are on the waiting list for social housing in England. It leaves financially vulnerable people with very few options, and when facing eviction or a rent increase, it’s really hard for many who receive benefits to find somewhere to live.
So, we have been arguing that not accepting DSS is discrimination. It’s been a journey with several wins along the way, but it has finally been declared unlawful to discriminate in this way!
